[ARCHIVED] Beaufort County officials urge residents to prepare for winter storm

White text that reads

WASHINGTON, N.C. – Beaufort County officials are urging residents to prepare now for a winter storm that could bring freezing rain and ice to the area this weekend.

Although the County’s outlook in terms of anticipated impacts has improved in recent forecasts, there is still a significant chance the area will see freezing rain and similar winter precipitation. Hazardous conditions caused by freezing temperatures and ice accumulations remain a major concern.

“The forecasted effects on our region could create road hazards and significantly impact travel throughout the county,” Beaufort County Emergency Management Coordinator DC Linton said. “Self-sufficiency, safety and communication will be key over the next few days.”

Here are some questions to consider as you prepare:

  • Do you have enough food, supplies, and medicine to last several days in the event you are unable to travel due to hazardous road conditions?
  • Are you prepared for power outages that last longer than 24 hours? How would you stay warm? How would you cook? Do you have battery-operated lighting and a way to charge electronic devices?
  • Are your outdoor pets and livestock protected from hazardous winter weather conditions? Do they have adequate shelter? Do they have access to water that is not frozen?
  • Do you need to go to the store to purchase food or supplies? If so, make that trip as soon as possible, as travel conditions could deteriorate quickly this weekend.

Pet owners are urged to keep their animals indoors whenever possible amid freezing temperatures. Beaufort County Animal Services has a limited supply of free wheat straw available for those unable to bring animals inside. Residents may also borrow a crate from BCAS if needed.

Officials are reminding residents that safety should always be the priority when heating their homes. Exercise caution when using space heaters, fireplaces, and other heating methods. Never operate a generator indoors.

With freezing temperatures and wind chills expected this weekend and next week, Beaufort County Public Works recommends insulating pipes to help prevent temperature-related damage.
